New diabetic neuropathy framework launched
A five-stage system to make diabetic neuropathy easy to understand, easier to detect and allow targeted management has been published.
The simplified, clinically intuitive system ‘Half Moon’ Diabetic Neuropathy Staging’ framework aims to bring clarity to treating diabetic neuropathy.
Despite its huge prevalence and its critical role in ulceration and amputation risk, many stages of diabetic neuropathy are still poorly understood across general healthcare settings.
The new framework will provide a shared language for multidisciplinary teams, support earlier identification of small‑fibre and large‑fibre involvement, help clinicians and services stratify risk with greater precision and make a complex, subjective condition easier to explain and act upon.
The five stages are titled At Risk, Early Changes, Noticeable Damage, Severe Loss and Advanced Complications.
Each stage allows for specific interventions, from cardiovascular risk factor optimisation in early stages to regular foot protection in advanced stages.
Neuropathy is not an ‘all or nothing’ diagnosis, with early identification through this staging system helping to prevent the progression of diabetic foot disease.
